Morocco eSIM & Connectivity Guide 2026: APN Settings, Dead Zones & Troubleshooting

Complete technical connectivity map for Morocco. APN settings for Maroc Telecom, Orange, and Inwi, plus a step-by-step troubleshooting script for when your eSIM shows signal but no data.

Morocco has solid 4G coverage in its cities and a growing 5G footprint, but it also has some of the most unforgiving dead zones in North Africa — the High Atlas, the Sahara approaches, and remote coastal routes. This guide gives you everything you need to stay connected: carrier APN settings, a regional dead zone map, and a precise troubleshooting script for the most common eSIM problem travelers face.

Morocco at a Glance: Network Coverage Summary

**Recommendation for travelers venturing outside major cities: choose a plan that roams on Maroc Telecom.** It has the widest rural and mountain coverage by a clear margin.

APN Settings: Manual Configuration by Carrier

Most eSIMs configure APNs automatically, but if you land in Morocco and have bars but no data, a manual APN fix is the most common solution.

Maroc Telecom (IAM)

Alternative APN (more stable in some regions):** **internet1.meditel.ma** — Username: **MEDINET**, Password: **MEDINET

Orange Morocco

Inwi

**Note:** Inwi does not currently offer eSIM for prepaid customers. If your plan says it uses Inwi, it likely roams via a partner — contact your eSIM provider for the correct APN.

Technical Connectivity Map: Morocco Dead Zones

Zone 1 — High Atlas Mountains ⚠️ Unreliable

**Affected routes:** Tizi n'Tichka pass (N9), Tizi n'Test (N10), Dades Valley, Todra Gorge approach

  • **What to expect:** Coverage drops sharply 10–15 km outside of town centres. Valleys and north-facing slopes lose signal completely.
  • **What works:** Maroc Telecom 2G/3G in towns like Ouarzazate, Tinghir, and Boumalne Dades. 4G is intermittent.
  • **Traveler advice:** Download Google Maps offline for the entire route the night before. Cache your accommodation addresses, GPS pins, and emergency numbers. Never rely on live navigation through Atlas passes.

  • Zone 2 — Sahara Desert & Erg Chebbi / Erg Chigaga ❌ No Signal

**Affected areas:** Everything beyond Merzouga and Zagora town centres, all desert camp sites

  • **What to expect:** Merzouga village has 4G on Maroc Telecom. The moment you enter the dunes (roughly 2 km east of town), signal disappears entirely.
  • **What works:** Nothing reliable in deep desert. Some camps have satellite Wi-Fi (Starlink).
  • **Traveler advice:** Complete all check-ins, share your location with family, and download offline maps before leaving Merzouga. Notify your accommodation of your arrival window before you depart.

  • Zone 3 — Rural Intercity Routes ⚠️ Patchy

**Affected routes:** N1 south of Agadir, R108 Atlantic coast south, remote P and R roads in the interior

  • **What to expect:** Gaps of 30–60 minutes with no signal on long drives between smaller towns. Orange and Inwi drop first; Maroc Telecom holds longest.
  • **Traveler advice:** If navigating rural Morocco, set offline maps before each leg and share your itinerary with someone who can alert authorities if you don't check in.

  • Zone 4 — Medina Districts (Signal Without Data) ℹ️ Special Case

**Affected areas:** Fes el-Bali, Marrakech Medina, Chefchaouen old town

  • **What to expect:** Full signal bars, but data is slow or intermittent. These are some of Morocco's most densely built historic areas — thick walls and narrow alleyways scatter signals and create micro dead zones even with good RSSI.
  • **What works:** 4G on Maroc Telecom; congestion-related slowness is unavoidable during peak tourist hours.
  • **Traveler advice:** Download the medina map before entering. Many riads offer reliable Wi-Fi.

Troubleshooting Script: Signal Bars but No Data

This is the #1 eSIM complaint from Morocco travelers. You see 4G LTE on your status bar, but browsers, maps, and apps won't load. Work through these steps in order.

Step 1 — Confirm the right line is active (2 minutes)

**iPhone:** Settings → Cellular → choose your eSIM line → confirm "Turn On This Line" is green AND "Default Line" for data is set to your eSIM, not your home SIM.

**Android:** Settings → Network & Internet → SIM cards → select your eSIM → enable "Mobile data" and set as preferred data SIM.

**Why this fixes it:** Many dual-SIM phones default data to the physical SIM. If your home SIM has no international data, you'll show signal (from the eSIM) but route data requests through the dead home SIM.

Step 2 — Enable Data Roaming for the eSIM line (1 minute)

**iPhone:** Settings → Cellular → [your eSIM plan name] → Data Roaming → ON

**Android:** Settings → Network & Internet → SIM cards → [eSIM] → Roaming → ON

**Why this fixes it:** eSIM data plans technically operate as roaming on local networks. If Data Roaming is off, the OS blocks all data traffic for that line even when connected to a tower.

Step 3 — Check and manually set the APN (5 minutes)

**iPhone:** Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Network (may be hidden on newer iOS) OR Settings → General → VPN & Device Management → look for a carrier profile. If no APN option appears, your carrier profile controls it — skip to Step 4.

**Android:** Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile network → Advanced → Access Point Names → tap + to add new.

Enter the APN for your underlying carrier (Maroc Telecom, Orange, or Inwi) from the table above. Save and restart the phone.

**How to find your underlying carrier:** Check your eSIM provider's website or app under "Plan Details." It will say something like "Roaming on: Maroc Telecom" or list the local partner network.

Step 4 — Force the phone to re-register on the network (3 minutes)

    1. Enable Airplane Mode for 30 seconds

    2. Disable Airplane Mode

    3. Wait 60 seconds for the phone to fully re-register

    4. If still no data: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Network) → Network Selection → Manual → select "Maroc Telecom" or "Orange Morocco" explicitly → wait for registration → switch back to Automatic

**Why this fixes it:** The phone may have latched onto a weaker tower or a network your eSIM doesn't have a roaming agreement with. Forcing manual selection confirms which networks your plan can actually use.

Step 5 — Reset Network Settings (5 minutes — last resort)

iPhone:** Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings. **Warning: this clears all saved Wi-Fi passwords.

**Android:** Settings → General Management → Reset → Reset Network Settings.

After resetting, re-enter the APN from Step 3 and repeat Step 2.

Step 6 — Contact your eSIM provider

If none of the above works, open a live chat with your eSIM provider and provide:

  • Your device model and OS version
  • The carrier name shown in your status bar (e.g., "Maroc Telecom" or "IAM")
  • A screenshot of your APN settings
  • Whether Data Roaming is enabled (show them)

  • Most providers can push a new configuration profile remotely in under 10 minutes.

Quick Reference: Best eSIM Plans for Morocco

The best eSIM for Morocco in 2026 depends on your trip length and destinations:

  • **City travel only (Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca, Rabat):** Any provider works — Orange and Inwi both have strong urban coverage.
  • **Multi-city + Atlas Mountains:** Choose a plan that roams on **Maroc Telecom** — it's the only carrier with meaningful coverage in mountain towns.
  • **Sahara Desert itinerary:** Download offline content before you leave. No eSIM plan reliably covers deep desert camps.
  • **Long stay (30+ days):** Consider a local physical SIM from a Maroc Telecom shop at the airport — better value for extended stays.
