How to Install an eSIM on iPhone: Step-by-Step Guide
A simple visual guide to installing a travel eSIM on any iPhone model โ from iPhone XS to iPhone 16.
Installing an eSIM on iPhone takes under 2 minutes. Here's the complete process.
Before you start
Step-by-step installation
Step 1: Open Settings
Go to Settings โ Cellular (or Mobile Data on some regions)
Step 2: Add eSIM
Tap "Add eSIM" or "Add Cellular Plan"
Step 3: Scan QR Code
Select "Use QR Code" and point your camera at the QR code from your provider. If you're setting up on the same device you received the email on, tap "Enter Details Manually" and copy-paste the activation code.
Step 4: Confirm
Tap "Add Cellular Plan" on the confirmation screen. Your eSIM is now installed.
Step 5: Set as travel line
Your phone will ask which line to use for data. Select your new eSIM for travel data. Keep your home SIM as your primary number for calls.
Step 6: Enable Data Roaming
Go to Settings โ Cellular โ your new eSIM โ enable "Data Roaming". This is required for the eSIM to work abroad.
Activation timing
Most plans activate on first use. If you buy before travel, the plan clock usually starts when you first connect to a local network โ not when you install the eSIM. Check your provider's terms.
Troubleshooting
**eSIM not connecting**: Toggle airplane mode off and on. If still not working, go to Settings โ Cellular โ your eSIM โ toggle it off and on.
**"Invalid QR code" error**: QR codes can only be scanned once. If you've already scanned it, contact your provider for a replacement.
**No service after landing**: Make sure Data Roaming is enabled for your eSIM line. Some iPhones default this to off.
